The Widal test is one of the most commonly ordered tests at our Garhshankar centre for patients with fever lasting more than a few days. Despite how often it's ordered, many patients aren't sure what the titre numbers on their report actually mean, or how it differs from a Typhidot test. This guide covers what Widal checks, normal range, and pricing.

What Is a Widal Test? (Full Form & Meaning)

The Widal test detects antibodies your immune system produces against Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi — the bacteria that cause typhoid fever. It measures two types of antigens: 'O' (somatic) and 'H' (flagellar), reported as a titre such as 1:80 or 1:160, indicating antibody concentration in your blood.

Good to Know

A single Widal titre reading isn't always conclusive — doctors often recommend a repeat test after a few days to check whether the titre is rising, which is more suggestive of an active infection.

Widal Test Normal Range & What Your Titre Means

Widal Test Titre Interpretation

Titre LevelInterpretation
Below 1:80Generally considered normal / negative
1:80Borderline — may need clinical correlation or repeat test
1:160Suggestive of typhoid infection, especially with symptoms
1:320 or higherStrongly suggestive of active typhoid infection

Normal reference ranges can vary slightly by region since prior typhoid exposure or vaccination in the local population affects baseline titres. Always compare your result against the range printed on your own report and discuss it with your doctor.

What Do S. Typhi O and S. Typhi H Mean?

'O' (somatic) antigen antibodies typically appear first and indicate a more recent infection, while 'H' (flagellar) antigen antibodies persist longer, sometimes from a past infection or vaccination. Doctors look at both values together, not in isolation, to assess how likely a current typhoid infection is.

Widal Test vs Typhidot Test: Which Is Better?

Is Fasting Required for a Widal Test?

No, fasting is not required for a Widal test. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw, unless another fasting test is being done at the same time.
